Il consorzio di SocialTruth comprende partner appartenenti a 6 paesi europei: tre rinomati istituti di ricerca: ICCS – Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (Atene – GR), UTP – University of Sciences and Technology (Bydgoszcz – PL), LSBU – London South Bank University (Londra – UK).

SocialTruth successfully completes its first tests

A European consortium of 11 partners is working to embed truthfulness in social media and the web.

27 July 2021 – The first two testing stages of SocialTruth, the engine that analyses online news and classifies and certifies its reliability, have been completed. SocialTruth (www.socialtruth.eu) is a multicultural and multidisciplinary European project designed and developed by an international consortium of 11 partners led by ICCS in Athens. Its aim is to analyse news and classify its trustworthiness, making the circulation of online information safer and more reliable.

After two years of teamwork, the partners involved in testing have completed this initial phase. The tests covered more than 700 case studies over 14 days, analysing around 500 websites, articles and online news items with SocialTruth. The data were classified and collected for delivery to the technical partners for further system development and refinement, to be completed shortly before the final testing stage in September 2021. These first experimental results are highly satisfactory and exceed expectations: almost 90% of ‘true’ news was correctly recognised by SocialTruth and identified as valid and reliable. The recognition rate for news containing ‘fake’ information reached 63%.

The evaluations used the Digital Companion, a simple add-on that can be installed on the most common browsers. User experience assessments emphasised its ease and practicality of use: it was considered very user-friendly and intuitive.

The blockchain system used to ensure that analysis results are dependable and robust proved reliable. These findings strengthened the consortium, particularly the technical team, which is now refining and improving the engine to move rapidly towards a highly reliable final product. SocialTruth will benefit individual users by checking the reliability of social media content and blocking disinformation. It will also help media organisations, content creators and journalists improve their investigative activities and resources through a new tool for checking different multimedia sources, supporting a more sustainable, high-quality and security-oriented web and social media ecosystem.

Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, SocialTruth was developed to combat fake news. Its distinctive approach is to create an open, democratic, pluralistic and distributed ecosystem. The initiative provides easy access to various verification services, ensuring scalability and building trust in a fully decentralised environment. The consortium includes partners from six European countries: three renowned research institutions—ICCS, the Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (Athens, Greece); UTP, the University of Sciences and Technology (Bydgoszcz, Poland); and LSBU, London South Bank University (London, UK). Technology and software development partners include Thales, Expert AI and Qwant (Paris, France), alongside two management consultancy companies, Tecoms (Rome, Italy) and Zanasi & Partners (Modena, Italy).

The consortium also includes two major publishing groups, Adnkronos and DeAgostini Scuola (Rome, Italy), and InfoCons (Bucharest, Romania), an active consumer organisation.
